Emergency Food

Article that was published recently about stockpiling food reserves in Alaska.

Recently I went to AC (the grocery/general store in town- the Alaska Commercial Company) and there were only half gallons of buttermilk and some other kind of milk left (that cost as much as the full gallons of Kirkland milk).

There is a problem with our runway.  The materials used (gravel?) to make it were the wrong size, so they had to dig it up and re-do it.  Unfortunately finding the correct materials to fix it have proven to be difficult, so we are still landing planes on half of a runway.  The jet pilots can't use some kind of landing technology because it would overshoot the landing (and we'd end up on the tundra), so I believe they have to land manually.  This requires a certain amount of visibility, and since it's often rainy/foggy here, there's been a lot of cancelled flights.  Alaska Airlines has threatened to stop flying to Bethel if it doesn't get fixed soon.

The Alaska Airlines jets that fly out here (usually in the mornings and evenings) are combi jets, that hold both passengers and cargo.  No plane means delayed deliveries, mail, supplies, food, etc.
