Alaska Vocab Lesson: The Bush

I live in Bush Alaska.  Bush Alaska generally refers to an area which isn't connected or nearby the highway system or AlCan highway.   You get to places in the Bush by flying, snowmachining (snowmobiling), or by dog sled.  The last two aren't meant to be funny, that's really how people travel to some places.

The Bush also isn't that touristy, like Kenai or Anchorage or the Inside Passage where all the cruise ships go.  Most of the people who come up here are here for the adventure and do things like travel up and down the Kuskokwim for a month and camp out on the river banks, go hunting, or go on some kind of expedition.

The Bush doesn't have stores like Target or Costco, which is why when people go "in town" they pick up so many things.  Even where Pitbull is going to Wal-Mart isn't in the Bush.

In the Bush you have roads, but they don't go anywhere outside of where you are living.  They just circle around town.

P.S. Sarah Palin does not live in the Bush, Wasilla is exits away from Anchorage.
